Pau-Pyrénées's surroundings
Au vert autour de Pau
Les saligues du Gave de Pau
As it meandered through the countryside, the Gave created the Saligues (marsh lands) with their fauna and flora so typical of humid climes.
Now you too should come and meander through here and let your eyes – and just your eyes because this is a delicate environment! – rejoice at the sight of giant patience, horse mint, fern and butterwort… and observe all the wonderful birds too, both the native ones and those lured to Pau by its agreeable climate: cormorants, egrets, Northern lapwings, herons, ducks, coots, wood pigeons, etc.
Some choice places to walk around the saligues are Narcastet, Assat, Meillon, Aressy, Mazères, Billère and Laroin.

Forests
In the woods of Bordes, Assat or Sauvagnon, you can see blackbirds, sparrows, doves, warblers or Northern barriers.
Look carefully and you may also spot boletuses, chanterelles, coulemelle (agaricus procerus), and some tasty trompette-des-morts mushrooms.
Then take a break and lounge in the shade of a beech, an oak or a Spanish chestnut tree.
Admire, too, the royal osmonde, a rare fern over two metres tall, orchids, carnivore drosera (protected), and milfoil with healing properties.
Be careful not to sting yourself on the nettles, though if you manage to pick some remember that they make a lovely soup!
Finally, with a little patience, respect and discretion, you may catch sight of a white-tailed deer. Ah yes, well-being, freshness and fulfilment...

Momas Conservatory of rare plants and vegetables
Inhabited since the 14th century, Momas castle affords an unrivalled view of the Pyrénées.
In its gardens grow more than a thousand rare or forgotten flower-plants and vegetables such as poor-man’s ham, pattypan, and Brazilian feijoa complete with its delicious fruit.
The charm of the garden and castle is matched only by that of their owner : Marie-Joseph Teillard gives a warm welcome to visitors and is always delighted to show them her “protégés”, which have come from far away and far back.
