Pau Golf-Club 1856 In 1856, a handful of Wellington's soldiers returning home after serving in Spain called in at Pau. To "kill the time" they hastily prepared a plot of land on the edge of the Gave mountain river and hit the first balls. This excellent idea resulted in the first golf course being built in mainland Europe in 1856. Even today, the clubhouse is reminiscent of its very "Victorian" style and the excellently cared-for greens have nothing to be ashamed of when compared to the superb lawns on the other side of the Channel!
